That would already be decent!  But why can't we get a decent debugger
environment (even on a Sun)?  I mean to have something under X11 as
ergonomic as some of those old Lisp Machine debuggers were.  I would
just love to have something as usable as Xerox's Interlisp debugger
front-end; that alone would reduce debugging time by at least 50%.

Maybe this is all wishful thinking...

On the ST uud complained about the sequence letter <J> in the next to
last line.  The Unix versions all did a nice `segmentation violation.'
Have others successfully recovered this file?

     I have been told that the graphics routines built into the operating
system are not efficient. I am tinkering around with 3d graphics and would
really like to get my hands on some (FAST) graphics routines. Specifically,
a line drawing routine, a filled polygon routine, and a filled ellipse. If
you have some of these, I WOULD REALLY like to have them. I am sure others
will too.

Subject: GhostScript 2.2 available

I uploaded the executable of GhostScript 2.2 for the Atari ST to
atari.archive Monday evening. It should be available for downloading
soon, probably in /atari/gnustuff/tos/ghstscrpt/gs22b.zoo. I am in
the process of moving, so the sources won't be posted for a little
while (maybe not until 2.3, which is due around the end of August).

GS 2.2 sports some bug fixes, a monochrome screen driver, and five
printer drivers (only one of which is tested). Improved 2.2 fonts are
available at other archive sites, but the old fonts seem to work fine
with 2.2 if you want to delay another lengthy download. This release is
a considerable improvment over 2.1.1 and I recommend it highly. With the
new screen driver, you can use ghostscript interactively to learn
postscript or test a small piece of PS code.

Which make v. 3.59 are you using?  The one from a.a?  In mine I do
*not* have to specify the complete path, but only the .ttp file
extension:

TEX = latex.ttp

Otherwise, it and v. 3.54(?) would have trouble finding the file.

     I got my first "do nothing" program to compile and link and waddling
through a slow program development I started to run into problems.  Then
something occurred to me.  I compiled the sample program (WTEST.C) that
comes with Lattice C and it compiled, linked and ran perfectly.  Then
I moved the 'main()' from the bottom of the source code to my normal
location just under the globals (the "top" of the program) and it failed
to compile.

     My best guess is that Lattice is a single pass compiler after all.
I asked around before and was told it was multi-pass.  But it's not
something that some programmers would notice.  At least not unless
they try porting programs written by people who organize top down.

     I called Goldleaf and the fellow I talked to didn't even know
if it was single-pass or multi-pass.  Maybe I didn't talk to their
best compiler man.  Anyway, he's going to look into it and call me
back tomorrow.  If this is true, then I think I'd call it a *major*
deficiency in their documentation.  It should have said so on Page 2
right under the title "What is Lattice C 5?"  The very first sentence
should have said that it's a single-pass compiler.  If it's not a
single pass compiler, then I seem to have found a serious bug. :-)

Well just pushing them down will work for a while but really just pushing them
down is only a temporary fix at best...
There are a few things you can do to stop it...
#1, DO NOT smoke near the computer. (My dad doesnt listen to anyone and smokes
    at the computer... Every 2 years it has to be cleaned out. And I mean
    CLEANED OUT! You wouldnt believe how rough smoke is on connections and
    such..)
#2, Get some contact cleaner (Be careful cause SOME will eat plastic too.. You
    do not want that...)
#3, Pull all the socketed chips out one by one. (I place all the chips on my
    workbench in the same order they are onthe motherboard so I know where
    they go.)
#4, once all the chips are out you can spray the cleaner over the contacts.
    (Note, if you do not want to do it this way you can pull each chip out one
    by one, spray the socket and then put the chip back in but pulling all the
    chips is faster. And wastes less.)  This cleaning disolves any oxidation
    and any smoke or other residues on the contacts.
#5, With the square chips you can sometimes loose contacts between the socket
    and the chip. (Tech specialties memory boards are good at causing this!)
    To fix it you take a medium sized paper clip and unfold it by half. YOu
    make the big loop into a handle and you cut the small loop so it has very
    little of the loop. YOur gonna use it as a pry bar and pull the pins in
    the socket out slightly. (NOT too far, remember that bending metal back
    and forth is not a good idea. So the less you bend it the better.. You
    dont need to bend it much anyhow..
#6, Put all the chips back in in the proper orientation and your alset. I did
    this with my dads machine and my own as well as three other computers.
    None of them responded well to my pushing the chips down.. (Had to keep
    pushing them down all the time.. Once a week at the least..) Once I went
    through the procedure above with all the machines they worked perfectly
    and still are. (2+ years!)

I would suggest getting someone knowlegable to do it though..

I have uploaded to atari.archive a corrected version of BibTeX
compatible with the new TeX 3.1 distribution.  Credit goes, of course,
to Frank Ridderbusch for recompiling it!  The difference is that it
accepts a TEXINPUTS environment variable compatible with TeX 3.1/LaTeX:

setenv TEXINPUTS '.\acm;.;e:\tex\inputs\local;e:\tex\inputs'

Dont forget that in both versions your *.bib files are looked for in
the BIBINPUTS path environment variable analogous to TEXINPUTS.

Subject: Superbase Paersonal date stamping of fields

Does anyone know how to date stamp fields within Superbase Personal ?

I keep a database of names and addresses for a missionary in Africa, so people
who change their address inform me first. So when the missionary comes home I
give her a copy of the database for her own records.

The problem is when I run Superbase Personal it sets the ST clock to the year
2038 ! which is useless for date stamping files never mind fields. What I would
like to do is every time I edit someones address a field would automatically
sho the current date. The manual gives no idication of how to do this.

Can't argue with that!  I subscribed this January, and can't
believe I'd never heard of it before.  The magazine is very
well done and the writing is very good, particularly the
regular columns by Dave Small and John Barnes.

I am considering upgrading to an Atari TT.  As I understand it TT's
only come in two models: the TT/2 and the TT/8.  Is the ST RAM *only*
on the mother board, or is half of it on the extra TT RAM card?

Also what kind of RAM is in the two types of RAM for the TT: SIMMs,
SIPs, chips, or some mixture of the above?  I would prefer getting a
TT/2 and upgrading the ST RAM to 4 Mb in the case that SIMMs are
involved.  I would probably later on, sometime next year when the
European plant for 16 Mb chips starts operation, get the faster TT RAM
when prices would fall.

i'll tell u why: unless there is source code, i can't run it on a unix
box. and i do NOT want to download (at 2400 baud) a 500kB file before i
look at it. i admit to not checking if source was included. if it is,
which i doubt, then...never mind. oh, the source better be C, not assembler,
too. by telling me it has a gem interface, i can guess it is highly
non-portable.

it's real simple: if u think unlzh solves the world's problems, then post
source code (so we can port it) and we won't complain (too much... :-).
then after unpacking, we can "zoo" it like it should have been in the
first place :-).

        I would like to buy my friend's PC-DITTO II from him
        but... He has no PALS for it!!

        He sent them away for the upgrade they offered but
        they went belly up before he got the replacements.

        Is there anyway to get these devices?
        You can't copy them , cause the security fuse's are blown.

        Has someone got a spare set?
        Has someone got the PAL equations?
        Has someone got a person to contact , formerly of PC-DITTO?

        Help would be greatly appreciated.

I have had *NO* troubles using MACCEL3.PRG with XCONTROL on my Mega 4
ST.  It even puts some gibberish (non-ASCII) in the cookie jar.  I
have upgraded from MOUSTRIP.PRG, to MACCEL2.PRG, to MACCEL3.PRG.  I
believe that MACCEL3 is just MACCEL2 with some XCONTROL, cookie jar
stuff added on, right Allan?  With MACCEL3, SYSINFO tells me that
MACCEL2 is installed.  In order to use MACCEL3.PRG you also need
MACCEL.CPX.  When I first installed XCONTROL I left MACCEL2 lying
around and that caused the system to freeze up!
